After completing training as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) and working as an operating room nurse for nearly two years in her home country of India, Harpreet came to the United States with her husband and immediately wanted to excel as a nurse. Within three months of putting down roots in a new country, she began the Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) program at the American Red Cross in Boston.
She worked as a C.N.A. at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose, Mass. for seven months, during which time she prepared for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) – and, after passing the exam, began working as a nurse at the hospital. “As a foreign nurse, I have faced many challenges,” she says, “but I’ve achieved them successfully.”
Currently, Harpreet is in her third year in the Registered Nurse (R.N.) to Bachelor of Science with a major in Nursing (B.S.) undergraduate evening online program at Rivier. After graduation, her ultimate goal is to then enroll in the graduate nursing program at Rivier in the nursing education track, and to become a nurse educator. “Nursing is an evolving profession, which was the first element that attracted me to it,” Kaur says. “Nursing is the path I have chosen and I want to excel in it. This is why I want to continue my nursing education.” On top of managing the demands of her coursework, Kaur volunteers for Rivier’s Nursing Wellness Connection, is a member of the Minority Nursing Student Support Program, and is part of the Diverse Nursing Network, which aims to diversify the field of nursing. She also has a young son and is a full-time mom.
Harpreet says the support of the Rivier community has been instrumental to her success in pursuing a nursing education and career path – something she is very passionate about. “I always admired the help I got at Rivier from different departments,” Harpreet says.
“Nursing is my passion,” she adds. “It is such a fulfilling profession with so many challenges and rewards.”
