First-year students from the 2014 Day of Service share their enthusiasm.
Rivier University’s third annual First Year Student Day of Service is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2015. With approximately 200 first-year students, 25 upper-class peer mentors, staff and alumni participating, the event will provide nearly 700 hours of service to the city’s non-profit organizations, especially those focusing on the needs of at-risk populations. The event is supported by a grant from the Million Dollar Roundtable Foundation.
The First Year Student Day of Service is a component of the University’s Student Success: Campus to Community program. This year-long course helps students strengthen their academic skills and promotes cultural awareness, commitment to service and vocational discernment. The event directly aligns with Rivier’s mission of ‘transforming hearts and minds to serve the world.’
Agencies participating in the service day events include Anne Marie House, Boys and Girls Club of Nashua, Girls Inc. of Greater Nashua, Harbor Homes, The Hunt Community, Nashua Soup Kitchen, The PLUS Company, Nashua Police Athletics League, Salvation Army, and the YMCA.
New this year, University alumni are joining the event. Alumni have been invited to volunteer alongside first-year students on April 18 or to contribute to the month’s service hour total in a complementary ‘Riv Serves Around the World’ initiative by providing meaningful service in their local communities at any time during the month of April. Alumni are encouraged to submit their service hours, organization, and photos via an online submission form that will be posted on the University website’s Alumni Service page.
Rivier has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) Foundation to support the program. The MDRT Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Million Dollar Round Table, The Premier Association of Financial Professionals®, serves as a means for members to give back to their communities.
