Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Douglas W. Howard, oversees all academic departments and programs, the Registrar’s Office, Library, and Early Childhood Center. As a member of the senior leadership team, he contributes to the University’s strategic planning efforts; works with faculty and administration to develop market-driven programs for traditional and adult student populations; leads retention initiatives; and sets standards for academic rigor and experiential learning that support greater student success. Prior to joining Rivier, Dr. Howard was Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of Humanities at Medaille College and prior to that was Associate Provost and Professor of English at St. John Fisher College. He has served as an Outside Evaluator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and as a Periodic Review Evaluator for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. He has authored several articles, contributed chapters and essays to collections, and been the editor for several publications. A Shakespearean scholar, Dr. Howard has published on 17th- and 18th-century English drama and has presented widely on topics ranging from learning communities to 20th-century American art. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in English from the University of Rochester, as well as B.A. in English from Miami University.
